Pause, My Youth

Hey hey,

It’s that time of the year again to reminisce on how the year went and make plans for the new year or maybe just go with the flow like other years.

I don’t think anyone will argue that this year went EXACTLY how they wanted it to go. Some had it good, some bad, and some just living. How did my 2020 go? Let’s see, I definitely didn’t start the year with a vision board; my mindset was more of going with the flow, and that’s exactly how it went- from starting Law School, to lock down life , to trying to read my books with mini panic attacks (NLS students will understand), tweeting and agitating about endsars, endless worries about my future, wavy relationship with God, stronger bond with friends to finally practising a bit of law. But sadly my writing which I really wanted to be on top of was left to rut in an abyss. All in all, it was a good year for me- God kept me and mine, and my friends had major wins this year which is a win for me.

BTW-according to South Korean standard everyone is a year older by the first day of the year and the United Nations classifies youth as those persons between the ages of 15 -24, so guess who’s not a “youth” again?
Why didn’t my age take a break when the world was on a break? I need an apology because where exactly is it running to?

After bible study with a group of friends online we were discussing general feelings about the new year, and I just said “It has been a while since I felt hyped about a new year- except my age that comes up once in a while”. But thinking about it now, I do want to make plans- doesn’t matter if they don’t go as planned, but I want to be hyped about the coming year. I’ve seen tweets about people going into the new year without plans due to the disruption of this year, but I do want to make plans- will look into making vision boards.

Off the top of my head right now, first thing on my list for the New Year is saying no to procrastination- this has taken a lot from me this year so definitely cutting it off. Next will be praying once I wake up- no “oh, I can do it after having my bath”, that is just procrastination too. Writing consistently too- only time I should be looking to take a break is towards my bar finals. For the rest, I will have a sit down and heartfelt talk with myself and set actual ACHIEVABLE goals. I believe it is important to go into the new year with a positive mindset and work towards changing habits. Having a vision board isn’t compulsory, it could be the little things like folding clothes after taking them off the hanger or washing the plates after eating, but writing things down acts as a reminder.

People achieving various milestones this year is no excuse to beat yourself up. Saw a quote on someone’s whatsapp status which says “you are not fried rice, you’ve not spoilt yet, you are jollof rice, you just need warming”– so this new year warm yourself, work on yourself and pray for better days.

Lest we forget, a lot of people lost their lives in different ways this year, so lets take a moment to pray for strength and peace for families they have left behind to move forward.

Wrapping up this year with a song from BTS titled Life Goes On. This came amidst the pandemic, and as we can see people getting jobs, some getting engaged and married, winning scholarships – life does go on.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE.
