Just Don’t Give A Damn

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. We are in the month of March which has significant days marked for the celebration of Women. International Women’s day was celebrated on the 8th of March and Mother’s day is going to be celebrated on 22nd of March. Both days are specially earmarked to acknowledge women in our lives; international women’s day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and a further call for gender equality, while Mother’s day honours our mothers for their sacrifices to make our lives better.

By the way, Law School is stressful!!

Not surprisingly, International women’s day celebration took a different turn of events on our favourite social media- Twitter, as it turned into a battleground with calls of boycott. The issue started when Banks started rolling out their International Women’s day messages. Wema Bank, “We understand you want equality, but you are the ones making the world this way. Happy international women’s day” while First Bank had a confusing message about lipstick and spanners. You might think oh, its not so bad but Sterling Bank announced a MAN as the International Women’s day MAN of the year!!!!

A few women with the most vocal being Kiki Mordi- an investigative journalist who did an undercover documentary titled “Sex for Grades” which exposed the scandalous acts of University lecturers coercing female students to sleep with them or fail their course called for the boycott of Wema Bank. Understandably, a lot of people (men) disagreed with this and made mention of how the only good thing she’s ever done is the Sex for Grades documentary. Now, its alright if you do not agree with someones opinion, but what really got to me is the sentence “who are you?”. Its like a pat on the head to a small child to sit down and keep shut- it is very demeaning and uncalled for. My word to all ladies out there fighting a system rigged against them is “just don’t give a damn”- keep doing you, keep on going. You are changing generations to come step by step.

Shout out to women (young and old) all over the world, you are seen and loved. Keep your head up, better days are coming.

In light of this, it’s only right that the Kpop song of this write up is Icy by rookie girl group Itzy . This song connects to people who are always looked down on- Talks a lot but I don’t care/ Y’all can keep blah, blah/ They keep talkin’, I keep walkin’.

Thanks for reading.

Have a great week.
